The Somatic Self
The “somatic self” experiences and reacts to life intuitively and instinctively. It is the part of our self that reacts depending on whether or not we feel safe, nurtured, supported, loved, and connected to the overall fabric of life. It is the part of our self that plays a major role in determining our physical health and emotional well-being. The somatic self regulates all of the body’s processes. Each person a relationship.
We can say that each person begins life with two minds or “selves”—A somatic self and a cognitive self.
We can also consider each person beginning life with FIVE brains. One brain (the neo-cortex) is devoted mainly to supporting and communicating with the cognitive self. Our four other brains, (the enteric nervous system, the reptilian brain,  the limbic brain, and the heart) are dedicated to communicating with and supporting the somatic self.

When the structure of your body is balanced, and your Mind is actively “not thinking” you enter into a flow state of Embodied Presence. Your thoughts, feelings, and actions occur simultaneously and spontaneously. Nothing comes between your thoughts and your actions, and everything is just as it should be. Not too much, and not too little, but rather a sense of pleasing fullness and great potential. At such times, we do not attempt to eliminate or control our thoughts, feelings, or actions, but rather we move with our thoughts, and feel into our experience. Breath, movement, action, and rest. Breath, movement, action, and rest.

Ever notice how easy it can be to promise yourself one thing, yet do another? Sometimes this phenomenon takes the form of “Dieting” or “Shopping” at other times it arises when we are unable to overcome an irrational fear. There seems to often be some part of us, other than our cognitive mind, which stops us from getting what we want in life. Yet somehow this same non-cognitive part can also be the source of our deepest wisdom and joy…when we open to it fully and honor the communication and knowledge it offers us.
