31.12.04. Introducing today's
issue of the Seishindo Newsletter, "Reflecting
and Giving Thanks," Charlie says: "I hope my reflections
can help you realize for yourself, how taking the time to give
thanks, is an important step in engaging the world with greater
enthusiasm, compassion, and creativity."
27.12.04. "It seems so basic
to our conditioning that we seek some form of resolution from
painful emotions. We feel more secure in the familiar world of
praise or blame, victory or defeat, feeling good or feeling bad
than in the liminal world where we sit with what we feel and do
not rush to resolution. When we cultivate different practices
that allow us to rest in the middle, we discover over time a growing
ability to relax into the unfamiliar and eventually turn our usual
fear driven patterns upside down. That, to me, is the essence
of transformation." Read more in the article entitled Liminal
Spaces and Transformation by Robert
Rossel, Ph.D. We do thank Robert for this excellent addition
to our Articles section.
16.12.04. Read today's issue of
our newsletter to ponder once again how to live a
life that matters. A life that makes a difference in the world.
01.12.04. How do you react to
deadlines? How would you feel if someone said "Hurry up,
the clock is ticking and we've got to get this completed!"?
How well do you cope with stress? Read today's issue of the Seishindo
newsletter to learn how to slow your body clock and rid yourself
of the illusion that time rules your life. The
Clock is Ticking!
20.11.04. We have added Janet
Hillis' poems to the Poetry section of our site. Janet Hillis
is an educator living in the Lake Region of New Hampshire and
the mountain-framed lakes are continual sources of inspiration.
Writing in her journal began as a way to generate words on paper.
It turned out to be an invaluable tool. Hidden within the reams
of random thoughts, were insights and connections and the journal
became the path to their discovery.
Enjoy!
15.11.04. In today's issue of
the Seishindo newsletter "What
is your relationship to Time?" you can read about how
our orientation to time profoundly affects the way we are in the
world. The Practice for this issue is "The
Future is Now."
09.11.04. In Carol
Lankton's article ''Using
Hypnosis to Transform Sleep Disruptions with Active Intention",
read about hypnosis as an excellent modality to help clients use
their own active intention to transform psychologically and behaviorally
influenced sleep disrupting behaviors into alternative behaviors
that will more efficiently meet their needs. The other article
by Carol Lankton added today talks about Transforming
Type A Personality.
01.11.04. In the third issue of
the Seishindo Newsletter devoted to Anger Management, please read
about the importance of forgiveness in the process of freeing
ourselves from the pain of anger and resentment. This issue is
entitled "Is
it finally time to forgive?", and the Practice for it
is "The
Gift of Forgiveness."
15.10.04. Today's Seishindo Newsletter
issue entitled "Are
you able to say both 'Yes' and 'No!'?" talks about the
importance of expressing ourselves congruently. When this happens,
we communicate the same message with both our bodies and our words.
Only then do we find ourselves feeling empowered and at ease.
And, as always, enjoy the Practice for this issue: "Yes
AND No - Saying BOTH at the same time."
14.10.04. We have added a new
section to our site today. It is dedicated to Anger
Management. You are invited to watch a
26-minute video on Seishindo Anger Management theories and practices.
It is not a full program, but rather it shows a range of our different
ideas, and specifically gives a sense of how Aikido is sometimes
used in our trainings. Don't miss the opportunity to see the author
of this website in person!
In this section, you will also find the link to the flyer for
the Seishindo Anger Management Workshop "Adopt
The Wisdom of Aikido to Achieve a Peaceful Victory Over Anger."
This workshop is available upon request. Read the flyer and let
us know if the concept of this workshop interests you.
01.10.04. Do you ever find yourself
stuck in a rut of anger, wishing you understood a bit more about
anger management? From our today's newletter issue entitled "Coming
to terms with anger" you will find out about the importance
of sensing our anger as accompanied by, and organized in coordination
with, other emotions. In feeling all of what is driving our behavior,
we discover it is this full range of expression that assists us
in feeling complete and relieved in the process. The Practice
for this issue is "Today
my anger is about ...".
15.09.04. In today's issue of
Seishindo newsletter you can read about the importance of experiencing
the past from the present when faced with a challenge, in order
to find the resources we need to create positive change in our
life. The title of this issue is "Stacking
Realities". The Practice for this issue is "Melting
The Thinking Mind".
09.09.04. "If my involvement
in music has taught me anything, it is that full enjoyment and
meaningful participation requires that one learn to balance joy
and sadness, boredom and excitement, hard work and play, social
and solitary activities, order and risky abandon. The process
is inexhaustible and the learning can last a lifetime." Read
more in the article entitled "Growing
Up With Music" by Robert
Rossel, Ph.D. We do thank Robert for this excellent addition
to our Articles section.
01.09.04. Today's issue of our
newsletter entitled "I'm
always busy, but nothing much gets done!" talks about
the importance of maintaining a continuity between moments in
time, and a continuity between the different parts of one's self,
in order to cultivate a sense of purpose, and stay connected with
an embodied sense of calmness. Don't miss the Practice for this
issue: The
River of Life.

20.08.04.
Many of us live our lives shuttling back and forth between
two seemingly different identities that often conflict with
each other. Our rational self tells us we need to lose weight
and exercise more, while our emotional self has us eating
potato chips and watching reruns on TV. These two conflicting
identities, living in a single human being, is what we often
encounter when clients come for therapy or coaching. The
client's rational self says "I should," and their
emotional self says, "Even though I know I should,
I can't." Clients come to us hoping to resolve this
conflict and to live in a manner that honors and melds the
relationship and desires of both identities. This integration
of self is one of the primary tasks of personal development.
Read more in Charlie's article Integrating
The Body's Four Brains, published in the 2004
Annual Somatics Issue of AHP Perspective, which is a
bi-monthly magazine for members of the Association for Humanistic
Psychology. (The photo on the cover is Charlie's.) |
17.08.04. Yesterday's
issue of our newsletter is about dwelling on the importance
of appreciating our time on earth, and learning from and appreciating
those we are in relationship with. This issue is dedicated to
Charlie's wife's grandmother, Koma Matsuda, who passed away peacefully
at 97 years old, on August 2, 2003. The story has been rewritten
from last year's commemorative issue.
12.07.04. Do you often get yourself
upset and feeling less than fully confident, as part of your preparation
for facing a daunting challenge? Let your somatic intelligence
take over getting the task done. Read more in the July 12, 2004
issue of our newsletter entitled "Trust
in the moment, and trust in yourself." The Practice for this
newsletter is "Do
nothing". You can perform it to learn to feel the difference
between Being and Doing.
01.07.04. Words are an additional
food source for the body. Literally! Feed your body angry words
and you suffer. Feed your body loving words, and you heal. The
more "nutritious" your use of verbal language is, the
more your body will be able to work for you and keep you healthy.
Read more in the 12th issue of our newsletter titled "Harmonizing
the intellect and the body".
14.06.04. When we engage in mindfulness
practices while in nature we have a heightened opportunity to
realize how the ebb and flow of our own life mirrors the ebb and
flow of all life. Read about this idea in our current newsletter
"The
ebb and flow of life" and don't miss the Practice
in this issue.
01.06.04. Are you actively involved
in the process of creating the future you really want? Read about
how we all tend from time to time, to stay stuck in degenerative
patterns that anchor us to the past, rather than truly imagining
and moving towards the future we desire. Find out more in issue
#10-2004 entitled "Does
your story have a future?"
31.05.04. Are you subscribed to
the "Pure Heart, Simple Mind Newsletter"? If not, you
can subscribe here.
If yes, you are invited to send in the names of books, music,
service, products, etc. you feel might be of interest to the Seishindo
community. Please include a short write-up (two or three sentences)
about your selections. Also, if you have a business, hobby, group,
or organization that you would like other members of the Seishindo
community to know about, then please send us a short write-up
(two or three sentences). You don't have a website? Then let us
know how other members might contact you by phone, fax, in person,
or in writing. Please send all the input here
and it will be published in our section Our
subscribers recommendations and introductions. Welcome!
25.05.04. We have added three
Seishindo newsletter issues and three Practices to the Japanese
section of our Site. We once again thank Tsutomu Shimoozaki
and Fumiyo Kitani for the awesome job they have been doing!
20.05.04. Three new Seishindo
summer workshops have been recently announced:
Use
Eastern Wisdom to transform your life, and thrive in the Western
World, San Diego, CA; Express
the Essence of your Body, Psyche, and SoulCommit to the
Life You Long For, New York City; Strength
and Peace at the Center of the StormUncovering The Hidden
Gifts of Trauma, Washington, DC. Please click on the title
of each workshop to find out more.
15.05.04. Shame, guilt, and deep
dark secrets, are frequent topics that my clients bring to their
sessions. So many people spend a tremendous amount of their total
life energy keeping people at a distance, not wanting them to
know "the truth." Many (but of course not all) of the secrets
we keep from others, take away from the overall quality of our
lives, and the lives of those that we actively engage with. Read
more in the most recent issue of our newsletter entitled "The
truth can set you free!"
01.05.04. Our need to live our
life in supportive relationships with others is very much a wonderful
fact of life, and not at all a weakness to be overcome. As mammals
we all require "A
little help from our friends." Please read this issue to deeper
understand how and why high quality health and emotional well-being
requires supportive limbic-emotional contact with others.
25.04.04.
If you have a RSS Reader, you are heartily invited to add Seishindo
RSS news feed to it. It is going to be updated at least twice
a month. Please read about its content here.
If you don't know what RSS is, you can read this
quickstart guide. The code for webmasters who will want to
show Seishindo News feed on their websites, can be found here.
15.04.04. Our somatic, reptilian,
and limbic brains, along with our body, orchestrate and "speak"
a language that is at least as complete, sophisticated, and grammatically
correct as the verbal language of our neo-cortex. This pre-verbal
language is the language of love and emotion, and it determines
the framework that verbal language is constructed from. Read more
in the today's issue of Seishindo Newsletter entitled "The
Language of Love and Emotion".
01.04.04. Our non-verbal emotional
wisdom often gets denigrated in the world today, and this leads
to various forms of discontent, stress, violence, and lack of
respect for humanity. We will all do well to spend time on a regular
basis, communicating with and deeply appreciating our limbic-somatic
wisdom. Read more in the most recent issue of our Newsletter titled
"The
Paradox of Reason and Emotion."
31.01.04. The Seishindo Practice
"Opposites
Attract" can help you to have a fuller, more appreciative
perception of yourself. It has proven to be a Practice that helps
people to feel more at ease with who they are, and takes away
the need to label yourself in a manner that is restrictive in
nature.
16.03.04. If you do not appreciate
the many mistakes you make along the way, you will rarely get
to congratulate yourself for reaching your cherished goal. If
you cannot appreciate your false starts and stumblings, then it
is unlikely you will have the heart to stay the course. Read more
in the issue of our newsletter titled "Your
identity as a learner."
05.03.04. Do you know that MANY
of the world's most gifted people are blessed with dyslexia? Everyone
from Leonardo DaVinci, to Albert Einstein. Do you know that MANY
of the worlds most successful inventors, entrepreneurs, and self
starters, have been identified as having ADD? If you want to overcome
the belief that something about you is "wrong", improve
your self image as a "student" and realize your strong
points as a learner, join Charlie in NYC on April 25, 2004, at
his workshop "ADD,
Dyslexia, and Other Learning ABILITIES."
04.03.04. As a singer, actor,
dancer, athlete, musician, or public speaker, learn how to tune
your body, spirit, beliefs, and technique to elicit a performance
that touches peoples hearts and moves them to action - join Seishindo
Life Coaching Workshop for performance artists in NYC on April
24, 2004.
03.03.04. Charlie's new workshop
has been announced: "Use Eastern Wisdom
to transform your life, and thrive in the Western World."
Learn how to utilize Aikido principles to develop a sense of vital
health and well being and cultivate a compassionate, centered
self. Click on this link to find out about the details:
Seishindo
Life Coaching Workshop in San Diego, July 12-13.
02.03.04. What Charlie tries to
do in Seishindo newsletters is realize and tease out the extraordinary
from the mundane. Animals, children, old folks, and even plants,
flowers, and weeds are all fair game. The idea being to start
noticing how life is always there, ready to teach us a "special"
lesson of some sort or another, if only we would take the time
to notice. Read more in the 4th issue of our newsletter entitled
"Life
is not a hardship to be endured."
01.03.04. The Seishindo Practice
"Connecting,
and extending out into the world" is meant to help you
have a sense of how you are connected to other life forms in the
world. Friends, allies, colleagues, loved ones, family members,
people with similar interests and concerns, nature, art.
25.02.04. We finally have Japanese
content on our site, and we are SO happy to announce this! We
heartily thank Tsutomu Shimoozaki for his great translation work!
Dear Japanese readers, welcome to the Seishindo
Japanese Pages!
21.02.04. Charlie is hoping that
his recent spate of animal stories will bring you in touch with
your own animal nature in a way that will help you to better understand
and manage your emotions. You are invited to read about the
rewards and risks of personal freedom in the 3rd issue of
our newsletter this year.
15.02.04. "Today"
is a simple yet profound Practice that follows the Seishindo principles
of Absorption, Utilization, and Balance.
14.02.04. "The quality of
perception and relationship with earth and sky is our foundation;
it creates our autonomy. In a close analogy, breathing unites
the two fields of earth and skyInspiration and upward movement,
expiration and movement down...". We have been happy to add
Hubert Goddard's article "Reading
The Body in Dance" and An
Interview with Hubert Godard to our Somatics
section today. Hubert
Godard is the Dean of the Dance and Movement Analysis Department
at the University of Paris and a Movement Instructor for the Rolf
Institute.
10.02.04. Cindy Franklin is Charlie's
friend, mentor, and muse, and she has played an important role
in the overall development of Seishindo. Cindy has done a great
job in taking over the book reviews for the "Pure Heart, Simple
Mind" newsletter. Please have a look at our Recommended
Reading page added today.
02.02.04. Learn how to join with
and utilize a person's current "bad" behavior. Rather
than telling a person they are doing something "wrong"
and suggesting a fix, validate their current model of the world,
and change will occur "on its own." You are invited
to read more in the most recent issue of our newsletter entitled
"Biting
the hand that feeds you."
23.01.04. We have added Tsutomu
Shimoozaki's article "Zen
and Motorcycling in the Rain" today. This is the first article
on our site written in Japanese and we are very happy to welcome
our new Japanese speaking/reading friends. Tsutomu (I call him
"Tom" sometimes) is active in Seishindo in Tokyo, and I look forward
to having him translate some of my articles into Japanese. The
next task after that is to brainstorm other methods for getting
Japanese people with limited English, and the rest of my students,
to be able to have an ongoing dialogue. Thanks Tsutomu! Your efforts
are very much appreciated.
17.01.04. Read about how listening
deeply to your own mammalian nature has the power to profoundly
enrich your life, in "Dog
Whispering", the first issue of our newsletter this year.
15.01.04. In the Practice "Waiting
Quietly For a Friend" we acknowledge the presence of
"an intelligence greater than myself" and we invite
this presence into our life, into our home, into our heart. In
Seishindo, we believe that a connection to an intelligence greater
than one's self is of prime importance for one's emotional and
spiritual well being.
11.01.04. Find out more about
The Bronx
peace village and Dojo and their intensive workshops on physical
conflict resolution.
10.01.04. Charlie's "Standing
Ovation" Performance Workshop in New York has been announced.
