From my point of view, perched "over here" in Japan,
there certainly does seem to be a lot to be potentially frightened
by lately. What with armed violence in many parts of the world,
tsunami, terrorists of many kinds, hurricanes, and the fact
that the New York Yankees might fail to win the pennant this
year!
Lately, feeling that I might not be the only one that notices
a disturbance in the field, I have decided to reengage my fear,
and share my experiences with you. With the hope of course,
that we might all learn something in the process.
Certainly I can say from my side, that writing the last few
issues (including today) and receiving feedback and support
from many of you, has offered me a wealth of wisdom and inner
peace.
The Force IS with us, so let's carry on gloriously till the
end of our time together here on earth!

1. Fear is a relationship
As my life goes on,
I continue to be amazed by the understanding that my experience
of life has little to do with what goes on around me,
And everything to do with what goes on inside me.
Of course there are times when I lose this understanding.
Times when I believe that I am frightened because of what happens.
"I mean, give me a break, wouldn't everyone be frightened
by such circumstances?" I tell myself.
Fascinating, these tricks we play with our thinking mind!
If I am not vigilant,
Fear is the state that I "naturally" revert to.
I first began to notice my fear years ago,
While having regular conversations with a friend.
It was easy enough to see how I worried myself sick when my
business was off a few percentage points.
I sat there and talked about how devastation was immanent.
How I would need to implement "drastic measures" if
sales did not improve rather quickly.
But there was also something else which often occurred,
That took me a great deal longer to recognize.
When business was going really well,
I AGAIN sat around and worried!
This time, about the downturn that was bound to happen,
And how I would suffer once my recently made profits quickly
disappeared.
I was frightened when business was bad,
I was frightened when business was good.
When all was said and done,
When the lights were turned out and I lay in bed at night,
I did not feel safe.
And that was that.
Fear was my way of knowing the world.
Fear was the primary relationship I had with life.
And no amount of therapy,
Positive affirmations,
Or alcohol,
Seemed to make a long term difference.
The one realization that helped me change my relationship with
fear,
Was understanding there was more to me than who I had become.
No matter how hard I tried,
I could not run away from this truth.
Although fear formed the basis of my relationship with the
world.
I came to realize that fear was not ME!
I came to believe that if I had the capacity to create a relationship
with the world that was fearful,
I surely also had the capacity to change this relationship into
one that was more fulfilling.
I don't know what it was that led me to believe this,
But thankfully,
Somewhere deep inside myself,
I came to know.
Who I am is my relationship with life.
And my relationship with life is based upon the inner workings
of my body.
Heartbeat,
Breath,
Posture,
The dynamic tension of my muscles,
The flow of energy throughout my system,
Healthy food.
Are the core ingredients that make up,
The way I think and feel,
My internal dialogue,
The emotional meaning of my memories,
My sense of being connected to and protected by Spirit,
What I believe in,
Who I am.
Little by little,
And still with many stops and starts,
By paying attention to the inner workings of my body.
I have come to understand,
How to replace my thinking mind with my breath.
As I use my breath to explore my self,
I develop the courage and sensitivity to,
Know myself from the inside out,
Trust myself,
Intuitively understand what I need more of and what I need less
of,
Allow and encourage the unimpeded flow of energy throughout
my system,
Trust that Life is who I am,
And my reason for being.
As I nurture a more responsive, caring relationship with myself,
I find that I am able to engage the world with greater enthusiasm,
courage, and compassion.
As I continue to learn how to stay fully engaged in the here
and now,
I deepen my experience of life as a relationship to be savored
and thankful for.
