1. A Story
Have you ever thought about how your orientation to time profoundly
affects the way you are in the world? Each culture has its own
unique way of relating to the concept of "time". Some
cultures perceive time as a room that is lived in. The "room"
of time is a constant that stays the same, as we change during
the course of our lives. American culture seems to more and
more think of time as a commodity there is never enough of.
When time is "wasted" a person misses out on an opportunity
that may never present itself again. Still other cultures experience
time as being circular, without a beginning or an end, and with
no clear markers as to past, present, and future. No matter
how we think about it, our relationship to time has a profound
impact on what we believe is possible. Here is a story to illustrate
what I mean.
Years ago I belonged to a healing community in the States.
A women who was a member of the group had an infant who was
born with a serious condition which was meant to limit the young
child's life span to only three or four years maximum. The woman
was totally committed to the health and well being of her infant,
and she spent every waking moment praying for her baby. Her
prayer went something like this: "Dear Lord, please heal
my baby and help him to be fully healthy." She offered
up this prayer countless times a day.
After some months of praying, and with the child's condition
not improving, the mother spontaneously had an important "truth"
present itself to her. She realized that in praying for her
child to be healed, in a deeper sense she was acknowledging
the "fact" that indeed her child was not well at this
time. In effect she was saying/praying "Lord, my child
is currently ill, and I am asking that you heal him and make
him healthy in the future." She realized that if she was
praying a similar prayer for herself, it would be difficult
for her to feel good about her chances of being healed if she
was continually reminding herself that she was currently not
healthy. She realized that even though her child was way too
young to understand the words of her prayer, that somehow her
words would not be fully supporting her child in feeling and
being healthy now as well as in the future. With her new understanding
of how her concept of time was deeply affecting her prayer,
she revised her concept and began praying the following: "Lord
thank you for the health and well being of my child. I am eternally
grateful." Rather than praying for how she wanted her child
to be different in the future, she prayed "from the future"
and brought her prayer into the present. She prayed from an
understanding that her child was "already" healthy,
and that he was simply in a rebalancing stage that if allowed
to run its course, would naturally bring about a continuation
of his healthy state as time went on.
After many months of praying her new prayer the condition of
her child slowly began to change. The doctors were surprised
and confounded. Little by little the child blossomed into full
health, like a flower that is awakened to life by the warm inviting
rays of spring sunlight. He eventually entered school along
with all of his buddies, and wound up being a shining example
of the power of love, gratitude, and an empowering understanding
of time.
2. Commentary
In Seishindo we give a great deal of importance to the model
of time that I first learned from my friend in the above story.
In actuality, her model of time very much matches what current
day physicists tell us. That time can be better understood by
describing the past, present, and future, as all existing at
the same time, rather than conceiving of time as being linear.
Time is a primary system that organizes our culture, and our
social, business, and personal relationships. Our concept of
time determines how we experience the world, our values, and
the rhythm and tempo that moves us through life.
In Seishindo we realize how the common Western model of time
severely limits us as we look to continue to evolve, change,
and be healthy. So many things we say when wanting to undertake
a new plan of action, or a new way of being, lead to the communication
of negatively oriented thoughts and images. The moment we say
"I want to" we acknowledge what we currently do not
have, or a way that we are not currently acting. Embedded in
the message of what we want, is the deeper message of what we
currently do not have. This is one of the important lessons
my friend learned while praying for her child. If she kept on
asking for the health of her child to be restored, she would
be constantly reaffirming that her child currently was not healthy.
If we come to the realization that in some important sense all
of time exists right now, we can begin to understand how being
healthy in the future, spawns vital life energy that travels
in all directions, healing us in the present. How we believe
we are at any one moment in time, affects us in the past, the
present, and the future. At every moment, the energy that we
emanate radiates throughout time, and throughout the universe.
In Seishindo, a lot of our Practices are built around the concept
of all time existing right now, in the present. We suggest to
people that rather than talking about and working towards how
they want to be in the future, that they tune into how they
are in a present that includes the future, already having achieved
their goals. In this regard we teach people to make "I
am" statements that signify that their goals are already
accomplished. Statements such as:
"I am healthy." "I am in a supportive loving
relationship." "I am living a well balanced lifestyle."
"I am financially successful."
The first thing we notice when we ask people to make such statements,
is they have a bodily reaction that suggests they do not believe
what they are saying. This in itself turns out to be an important
learning for people. They come to realize that if they do not
currently believe they are "X" then they are not supporting
the further possibility of being "X" with their entire
being. If we were to say "I am sick today, but I will be
healthy starting tomorrow," chances are we will not fully
believe what we are saying, because people rarely know how to
jump across the chasm that their thinking creates. Health and
disease are not two separately occurring states. Every healthy
person also has disease, and every unhealthy person is also
healthy in some respects. There is no clear boundary between
health and disease, and neither one of these concepts is static
in nature. Every moment of health, at some point in time leads
to disease. Every moment of disease, at some moment in time
leads to health.
I would like to offer you the possibility of an early Christmas
gift. Please give yourself the gift of believing that you are
already everything that you always wanted to be. Breathe into
this radical concept, and then simply allow and encourage yourself
to grow into your new sense of self.
Today's Practice will give you the opportunity to do just this!

Check this site out, and you will look at the world somewhat
differently afterwards. Let me offer here a great thing to
do if you are working with self hypnosis Practices like the
one presented in today's newsletter.
Click on the link shown above and stare at either the blue
box with the grey box inside of it, OR the yellow box with
the grey box inside of it.
Stare until such time that you see two grey boxes where there
is initially only one. Once you reach this state chances are
the images you see will move around a bit, and change back
and forth.
When you are in this state of relaxed vision, repeat the
words that come to you based on the specific self hypnosis
process you are following at the time.
This kind of visual process can really help you to maintain
the kind of state that leads to pleasing results.
Have fun with this and let me know what you discover.
5. Suggested Books
"The Dance of Life - The Other
Dimension of Time." Edward T. Hall
This is Charlie chiming back in with a book review
this time, because Edward Hall's book is a perfect compliment
to today's newsletter, and I wanted to let you know about
his work.
Hall is a renaissance man who shares the wisdom he has
come across in his years of studying people of various cultures.
He describes to us the many ways that our concept of time
plays a major role in determining how it is we experience
ourselves, and the world we live in. His style is conversational
and easy to read. I highly recommend this book to anyone
that considers themselves a student of life. Mr. Hall has
much to teach us.
6. Suggested Music
"Talking Timbuktu" Ry Cooder,
Ali Farka Toure
A wonderful album that brings together in a wonderful
way, the confluence of African music and American Blues. Ali
Farka Toure is one of Mali's leading singer-guitarists,
and if you allow yourself the freedom to listen without thinking,
you might think you were hearing John Lee Hooker. Ry
Cooder on the other hand has been on the American scene
for years. He is a clever driving musician that likes to explore
the edges, and loves to sing the blues. This whole album rocks!
